Indoor vs Outdoor Tennis for Kids in New Jersey: What Actually Matters
The real trade-offs between indoor and outdoor kids tennis in NJ — weather, cost, court quality, and consistency. Written for parents choosing a winter program.
This is the question every North Jersey parent asks us: indoor or outdoor?
Weather
Outdoor programs cancel. A lot. Between rain, cold snaps and the November-to-March freeze, an outdoor 10-week winter session realistically loses 2-3 weeks. Indoor loses zero.
Court surface
Indoor courts are typically hard court or cushioned hard court. Kids get consistent bounces, no wet leaves, no glare. For beginners this matters more than it sounds — hitting a ball that behaves predictably is 80% of learning.
Cost
Indoor is $20-50 more per session than outdoor. In exchange you get every scheduled week actually played. On a per-hour basis, indoor is cheaper.
When outdoor wins
Late spring and summer. Bergen County has beautiful outdoor courts and free rec programs in June, July and August. If your kid loves it in the winter, sign up for a summer camp outdoors — best of both worlds.
