What age should a kid start tennis?
Five is the sweet spot for group play. Some four-year-olds do fine if they've had structured sports before, but five-to-nine is the range where a group clinic actually delivers on skill development and fun.
By nine most kids either move into more competitive junior programs or drop out entirely. The 4-9 window is when the habit gets built.
Indoor vs outdoor in Bergen County
Bergen County has plenty of outdoor courts — Van Saun, Graydon, Wilde Memorial, Boulder Run. All great in September and early October. All useless from November through March.
If you want your kid to actually get a full season of tennis, you need indoor. That's the whole reason we run our Fair Lawn clinic year-round.
What should a winter clinic cost?
A 10-week group clinic in Bergen County runs $300–$450. Private lessons are $60–$120/hr. For a first-timer, group is the right answer — it's cheaper, more fun, and the social element keeps kids coming back.
