Kids Tennis by Age
Tennis for a 5-year-old is not tennis for a 9-year-old. Pick your kid's age below for what a session actually looks like, what racket to buy, and what to expect.
Tennis for 5-Year-Olds
Five is where it starts. At this age we build the motor patterns — swing, catch, throw, run — using games, not drills. Real tennis grows out of it naturally.
Tennis for 6-Year-Olds
Six-year-olds start to rally. Not baseline-to-baseline yet, but short-court back-and-forth is very possible. This is where kids start saying 'I love tennis' unprompted.
Tennis for 7-Year-Olds
Seven is the age where tennis starts looking like tennis. Full swings, real rallies, and enough attention span to work on a single skill for 10 minutes.
Tennis for 8-Year-Olds
Eight-year-olds can play a real match. Scoring, sides, serving to the correct box, all of it. This is where tennis becomes a lifelong sport, not just an activity.
Tennis for 9-Year-Olds
Nine is the transition age. Most kids are ready for regular-compression balls, full-court play, and a step up in intensity. It's also the last year of our 4-9 clinic — after this, kids move into our 10-13 group.
