The right age to start
Five is the sweet spot for group play. Motor skills are ready, attention span is ready, and a well-run group is more fun than a private lesson at that age. Some four-year-olds do fine if they've had structured sports before — most don't.
By nine, kids either move into more competitive junior programs or drop the sport entirely. The 4-9 window is when the habit gets built. Our Fair Lawn clinic is built exactly for that window.
Indoor vs outdoor
Bergen County has plenty of great outdoor courts: Van Saun in Paramus, Graydon in Ridgewood, Wilde Memorial in Glen Rock, Boulder Run in Wyckoff. All excellent — all locked and useless from mid-November through March.
If you want a full 10-week season of tennis without cancellations, you need indoor. That's the reason our program runs year-round at 21-05 Morlot Ave in Fair Lawn.
More on that in our indoor winter tennis guide, or see the current winter session dates and schedule.
What it costs
A 10-week Bergen County group clinic runs $300–$450 depending on court type and coach quality. Private lessons are $60–$120/hr. For a first-timer, group beats private on every axis — cheaper, more fun, and the social element keeps kids coming back.
Our Winter session is $360-$400 for the full 10 weeks. Roughly $36-40/hour for coached indoor tennis with small groups.
Which towns we serve
Our courts are in Fair Lawn — a natural hub for most of central and western Bergen County. Every town below has a dedicated page with drive time, local schools we see kids from, and the specific route:
What actually happens in an hour
Warm-up games — running, catching, throwing. Then the skill of the day: forehand, backhand, serve, volley, rotating through weeks. Then live rallies and games built around the skill. Ends with high-fives and a debrief.
Kids are grouped by ability, not just age. A shy 6-year-old and a bouncy 6-year-old don't necessarily land in the same subgroup — that's on purpose.
How to choose a Bergen County kids tennis program
Three things matter, in this order:
- Drive time. If the drive is over 25 minutes, the odds your kid actually keeps going drop hard. Pick close.
- Indoor courts. If it's outdoor-only, you'll lose weeks. Non-negotiable for winter.
- Small groups. More than 8 kids per coach and your kid is standing in line instead of hitting.
