Indoor Winter Tennis for Kids in Bergen County

From mid-November through March, Bergen County tennis is an indoor sport or it is nothing. Here is what that actually means for a 4 to 9 year old, and how to choose a program you will not regret in February.

Every outdoor court is closed

Van Saun in Paramus, Graydon in Ridgewood, Wilde Memorial in Glen Rock, Boulder Run in Wyckoff, Memorial Park and Berdan Avenue in Fair Lawn - all outdoor, all locked or unplayable through the cold months. Nets come down, surfaces ice over, and even on a mild January afternoon a cold ball barely bounces.

That is not a small detail for a beginner. A young player learning to time contact needs a ball that behaves the same way every week.

What to look for in an indoor winter program

  1. Drive time under 25 minutes. In January, a 35-minute drive is the reason families quit in week three.
  2. Junior-sized courts. An adult court is too big for a 6 year old. Look for junior dimensions or a full-size pickleball court, which matches USTA junior sizing.
  3. Small groups. More than eight kids per coach and your child spends the hour in line.
  4. A real session, not drop-ins. Ten consecutive weeks with the same coach beats twenty scattered one-offs.

What indoor winter tennis costs

Indoor court time in Bergen County is the single biggest driver of price. Group clinics run roughly $300-$450 for a 10-week winter session; private indoor lessons run $60-$120 an hour. For a kid under 10, group wins on cost and on fun.

Our winter session is $360-$400 for 10 classes - around $36-$40 per coached hour on indoor courts.

Our indoor winter clinic

Ages 4-9, at 21-05 Morlot Ave in Fair Lawn, on the indoor courts at Montclair Pickleball. Session 1 runs November 16 - January 24 and Session 2 runs January 25 - March 28, weekday afternoons plus weekend slots.

Full details and the weekly timetable are on the winter lessons page, and drive times by town are in the Bergen County guide.

Parents actually say this

Kids leave grinning. Parents keep re-signing.

Our kids have been taking tennis lessons for a number of years and felt lukewarm about their experience...until we found First Serve Tennis! Not only did my son's skill level improve enormously, he loved going to his lessons for the first time. The [coaches] are attentive and enthusiastic, and great teachers. We highly recommend First Serve Tennis!
Jacob really loved it and he improved a lot. Couldn't ask for more.
We thought the coaches were kind and fun. That means everything to my kids to keep them wanting to continue.

Indoor winter questions

Which Bergen County tennis courts are open in winter?+

Nearly all public courts - Van Saun, Graydon, Wilde Memorial, Boulder Run - close from mid-November through March. Winter play means an indoor facility, and there are only a handful in the county running dedicated kids programs.

How cold is it inside during winter clinics?+

The courts are heated and kids usually shed a layer after warm-up. Dress in layers rather than a heavy coat.

Is indoor tennis worth the extra cost?+

In winter it is the only option that delivers a full season. Our 10-week indoor session is $360-$400, which is in the same range as a group clinic that loses weeks to weather in the shoulder seasons.

Do you cancel for snow?+

Only if the roads make it unsafe to travel. The courts themselves are unaffected by weather.

How far in advance should I register for winter?+

Early. Our fall session sold out completely, and winter slots in the 4:00pm and 5:00pm windows go first.
